Nature’s Ocean Aquarium Sand:
• Every grain of sand in the ocean is covered with a biofilm. Nature’s Ocean® Bio-Activ Live™ Aragonite is naturally from the ocean. The bacteria on the sand are in a biofilm, therefore the bacteria are in their natural state, immediately removing toxic waste.

• Artificially adding bacteria (or cultured bacteria) does not make the same biofilm. It is not as efficient as the biofilm found on sand in the ocean which have been naturally selected through millions of years of evolution.

• All bacteria on Nature’s Ocean® Bio-Activ Live™ Aragonite are preserved in their natural live state using a patented process and a patented saltwater enrichment solution QX- 23™.

• Nature’s Ocean® Bio-Activ Live™ Aragonite is guaranteed to contain more than 10 million live bacteria per pound of sand in a natural biofilm, ready to instantly start the cycling process and stabilize your tank.

• Contains live marine autotrophic bacteria to provide proper inorganic chemical balance.

• Contains live chemolithotropic bacteria.

UNITED STATES PATENT AWARDED TO NATURE’S OCEAN®BIO-ACTIV LIVE® ARAGONITE REEF SAND FOR AN INSTANT CYCLING® LIVE AQUARIUM SAND PRODUCT

United Sates Patent No. 6,376,229 issued on April 23, 2002 for a new method of preserving marine bacteria. Using the patented method Nature’s Ocean® harvests and packages live sand with an optimal amount of water and air in retail packaging specifically dimensioned and configured for maintaining ammonia oxidizing bacteria in a state wherein the bacteria are capable of metabolic and physiologic activity in excess of twelve months at room temperature. When introduced into an aquarium Nature’s Ocean® Bio-Activ Live® Aragonite Reef Sand instantly begins the cycling process which provides an optimal environment for marine life.

Rapid Cycling of Organic Compounds in the Newly Established Aquarium:
In the beginning of a newly established aquarium, waste products can quickly build up to toxic levels. Introducing fish, plants, and food to your aquarium begins a natural process called “Biochemical Cycling” which is exemplified by the nitrogen cycle.
The process begins when fish and invertebrates excrete waste which is added to the ammonia produced by decaying food and organic compounds. The more sources of fish waste, the quicker and greater the ammonia problem. Harmful ammonia and nitrite are constantly converted into less harmful nitrates, which in turn is used by plants and algae for food. An aquarium is full of both autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria that want nothing more than to attach, grow, and form BIOFILMS where the bacteria convert toxic nitrogenous compounds and ammonia into harmless products.

Nature provides many types of bacteria that in the presence of oxygen carry out the oxidation of ammonia to nitrites and eventually to nitrates in a process known as nitrification. First, bacteria settle on aragonite (reef sand) where they grow into colonies and eventually form a BIOFILM. Marine nitrifying bacteria in the biofilm oxidize ammonia to nitrite. Then other bacterial species further oxidize nitrite to nitrate. Nitrate not utilized by plants is removed by other bacteria in the absence of oxygen (the anaerobic environment found in the lower levels of the sediment) in a process called denitrification. These bacteria are not harmful and are quite abundant in nature. However, three conditions are required for this process to occur:

1. A surface upon which bacteria can attach, grow, and form BIOFILM.
2. Ammonia as the substrate to start the process.
3. An aerobic environment.

“Cycling” your Fish Tank”
When you start a new aquarium with dry sand or gravel, colonies or beneficial bacteria have not yet had the chance to attach to a surface and grow. For a period of several weeks this presents a very hazardous environment for your fish. One has to gradually build up the source of ammonia (i.e., start with only one or two small fish) to allow time for the beneficial bacteria to grow and form a BIOFILM.

Now with Nature’s Ocean Bio-Activ ™ Live Aragonite Reef Sand, there is no waiting period or delay while waiting for bacteria to establish themselves. Both autotrophic and heterotrophic bacteria required for rapid cycling of the aquarium are already in their natural state – a BIOFILM on the sand particles. Nature’s Ocean Bio-Activ ™ Live Aragonite Reef Sand is fortified with a patented enrichment solution, QX-23™, which keeps the bacteria alive, primed and ready to cycle harmful metabolic end products the moment it is added to your aquarium. Each pound of Nature’s Ocean Bio-Activ ™ Live Aragonite Reef Sand contains more than 10 million live bacteria per pound in naturally-formed biofilms ready to biochemically cycle your aquarium and rapidly provide a healthy environment.

For Best Results Use as Follows:
Use a minimum of 1 pound of Bio-Activ Live® Aragonite per gallon of saltwater.

Setup filtering system and allow it to circulate

During the first month, introduce no more than 1 inch of fish per 5 gallon of saltwater.

ONLY NATURE’S OCEAN® OFFERS LIVE ARAGONITE PACKAGED ACCORDING TO THE PATENTED METHOD. NO WAITING… JUST ADD FISH! ®

United States Patent No. 6,939,708 issued on September 6, 2005, titled METHOD OF RAPRID BIO-CYCLING OF AN AQUARIUM, discloses and claims a method for rapid cycling a marine aquarium using sand harvested from a submerged marine environment and packaged with specific ratios of water and air in an environment and packaged with specific ratios of water and air in the environment wherein the marine microorganisms remain biologically and physiologically viable for extended periods of time.

Preserving natural marine bacteria biofilm and subsequently introducing the marine bacteria into an aquarium in accordance with the teachings of ‘708 Patent provides aquarium owners with the ability to substantially reduce aquarium set-up time rapid biochemical cycling.

Frequently Asked Questions

1-Question. What is Nature’s Ocean Live Aquarium Sand?

Answer: Nature’s Ocean® Bio-Activ Live™ Aragonite Live Aquarium Sand is naturally derived from the ocean. Its Live Sand formula has a reputation for eliminating the final traces of nitrates. It is used to remove toxic wastes from saltwater aquarium tanks. Live sand helps speed the natural nitrogen cycle of aquariums thereby allowing faster introduction of livestock.

2-Question. What is the difference between Reef Sand and Nature's Ocean Live Aquarium Sand?

Answer: Reef Sand is live sand when it is on the bottom of the ocean floor, it is here where the reef sand is alive. When the Reef Sand has been out of the seawater for a period of time and exposed to the airborne elements it is considered to be dead sand. (lacking nitrifying bacteria)

3-How is it used?

Answer: Nature’s Ocean® Bio-Activ Live™ Aragonite Live Sand is preferred by saltwater aquarists as a natural biological filtration source, but can be used for many other purposes such as adding it to a tank as a shallow or deep sand bed to using it in combination with live rocks and aquarium plants. Use a minimum of 1lb Bio-Activ Live Aragonite Live Sand per gallon of saltwater. Set up an appropriate filtering system and allow it to circulate. During the first month introduce no more than 1” of fish per 5 gallon saltwater.

4-Question. What are the benefits of using Nature's Ocean Live Aquarium Sand?

Answer: Some advantages of including Live Sand in the reef aquarium are:
· Instantly starts the cycling process to help stabilize your aquarium to more quickly add livestock.
· Maintains proper ph levels
· Reduces harmful nitrate
· It also provides refuge for those fish that bury in the substrate and invertebrates that hide and reproduce in the sand.
· The light color of the sand reflects light off the aquarium bottom and makes the tank look brighter.

5-Question. What are the essential elements of Nature's Ocean Live Aquarium Sand?

Answer: The essential elements are as follows: Zinc Sulphate, Calcium Chloride, Manganese Chloride, Cobalt Chloride, Copper Sulphate, Sodium Molybdate, Strontium Chloride, Nickel Chloride, Potassium Bromide.

6-Question. Where does Nature's Ocean Live Aquarium Sand come from?

Answer: Live sand comes from the bottom of the ocean floor. It varies in its composition depending on where it was collected, but it usually consists of coral sand that is pulverized and eroded pieces of coral. Some of the sand around coral reefs is the result of the feeding activity of parrot fish. These fish scrape the coral surfaces with their hard beaks to get at algae and then crush the calcareous material into fine particles. The parrot fish excrete this indigestible debris in big clouds and the resulting material ends up on the sea floor. Live Sand is harvested responsibly and is not dangerous to the long term health of any reef worldwide.

7-Question.What does it look like?

Answer: View livesand.com to see pictures of our various Live Sand products.

8-Question. Who uses Nature's Ocean Live Aquarium Sand?

Answer: It is normally used at a rate of 10lbs per square foot of the tank floor’s bottom area which yields about a 1″ deep covering. Depending on your needs or preferences the depth may vary from 1/8″ to 3″s of covering.

12-Question. How do you know if you are getting Nature's Ocean Live Aquarium Sand or dead sand?

Answer: A quality Live Sand product will always have an expiration date to ensure that you are getting only the best and freshest product. Always insure that you are getting good quality Live Sand by purchasing it from a reputable supplier. find-a-distributor

13-Question. How do I maintain the Nature's Ocean Live Aquarium Sand?

Answer: When using a Live Sand substrate bottom, you should include several creatures that will turn-over, or move the sand around. Some recommendations include: Brittle Starfish, Serpent Starfish, Sea Cucumbers and other detritivores; the more different types of detritivores the better, since each creature moves the sand around differently.

14-Question. How long will the Nature's Ocean Live Aquarium Sand last?

Answer: As long as the Live Sand stays wet with our special formulated Nutri-Seawater liquid, Nutri-Seawater will keep the organisms in the sand alive. Our Live Sand has a shelf life of 12 months.

15-What should you do with the liquid in the Natures' Ocean Live Sand package?

Answer: When Nature’s Ocean Live Sand product is used we recommend that you also pour the Nutri-Seawater liquid that is in the package into your aquarium tank, this liquid is used to help preserve the Live Sand in storage and will help with the instant cycling of your fish tank.

Answer: Nature’s Ocean Live Sand does not cause any nuisance algae since the product is sealed upon harvesting and properly preserved till it is used in your aquarium.

18-Will Nature's Ocean Live Aquarium Sand cloud my aquarium?

Answer: A short term cloudiness can occur after you first fill up your aquarium. This will rapidly clear up after the suspended sand settles to the bottom after 4 – 6 hours.

19-Do I still need to do water changes if I use Nature's Ocean Live Aquarium Sand?

Answer: Nothing can replace the good practice of small monthly water changes (10% – 20%) for your aquarium.  An easy way to do small water changes is using Nutri-SeaWater®

20-Can I clean my aquarium with a magnet if there is black beach sand in the tank?

Answer: Yes, when cleaning your aquarium with a magnet scrapper it is important to be careful not to get your magnet to close to your black beach sand. If you pick up some of its magnetite particles just simply remove them with your fingers or a cloth. It is important to ensure that all the particles are removed to prevent any accidental scratching of the aquarium walls. You can use a non-magnetic scraper to remove any algae that is close to the black beach sand substrate.

21- Why does particles of black beach sand get attracted to the magnet in the scrapper?

Answer: Black Beach Sand is a 100% all natural product that is composed of minerals that erode and collect near beaches. One of black sands (mineral sands) major mineral components is called magnetite. Magnetite is a non-water soluble mineral that is attracted to magnet scrappers. This mineral is totally inert in an aquarium environment and has a dark coloration giving black beach sand its natural appearance.
